"Can We Keep Our Heads Above Water?"
Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Thousand Oaks Library
1401 E. Janss 7:00 P.M - 8:30 P.M.
"We will never know the worth of water till the well is dry” -Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732
Water, along with oxygen, is the lifeblood to all creatures and activities on earth. We don’t just need it for our daily mundane uses such as showering or brushing our teeth. Fully 80% of the water is used as irrigation to grow our food. The rest is used by cities and industries in all forms of material fabrication for our consumption. So what are the realities of the water situation? The problems? The solutions? Are there new sources of water? What is the linkage to global climate changes? How can we use water in a more sustainable way? What can YOU do? The short and long term future of California hangs on our stewardship of this precious resource.
Ventura County resident and architect Dao Doan (www.mainstreetarchitects.com) will offer his views from an architect and urban planner/designer perspective on this critical topic. Born in Vietnam, Mr. Doan studied architecture in Belgium and then came to the US, where he graduated in this field from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He worked in Orange County before moving to Ventura County in 1989.
Mr. Doan, chairman of the Ventura County Civic Alliance, serves as a board member of the Housing Conference, Livable Communities Working Group and the Congress of New Urbanism. He is a strong advocate for diverse affordable housing, green and sustainable development and the preservation of all nature. Currently, he is leading two local projects: Oxnard's Advanced Water Purification Facility and the expansion of the Thousand Oaks Municipal Service Center/Household Hazardous Waste facility.
A question and answer period will follow the presentation.
The program is free and open to the public.
